[Walter has recorded a video message from the point of view of someone who has just come through the door into his cabin and sees Walter at his desk in the chair turned around to face the viewer. He gives a little salute-wave.]

Didn't get me. But nice try.

Yes, I do see why you'd think that. A tempting trap so many inmate overthinkers fall into. It's only the impulsive ones who get out lickety-split after realizing they hate the consequences of what they just did and they never even want to do it again. Anyone calculating enough to see the pattern is a little more inured against change. Observer effects, etc.

It has got you started on your path, I imagine, actually putting some of what you're capable of on the table. Pardon the pun. But if I were a gambling man I'd give you at least another year.

[Jedao is absolutely a gambling man.]

I wasn't told the details of your punishment, but you're quite right that she wouldn't be fazed by the physical pain of your experience. Unfortunately, I don't control John's reaction. I do think my disappointment will matter to her as well, albeit to a lesser degree. Would you say that what you want is a consequence that gets a reaction from her?

My father did four and half years here for over a million, which I will admit was a bit galling. But to be fair, he'd been tortured for 400 years back home before they finally finished executing him, so. Win some lose some, if you'll pardon a bit of glibness of my own.

To your earlier point, I do know that the barge isn't just. The barge isn't trying to create justice, just change. Anyone who says differently isn't paying attention.

[To say nothing of how many people that might be.]

But I need to teach Justine accountability. So I still need to think about what could be just. And I do think what you want matters to that.

If you wanted an apology, comma, any, comma, possibly aggravating and slightly humiliating, I could probably arrange that. If you wanted an apology, comma, sincere, I probably couldn't get you one from her any time soon, but I could give you one myself, in her presence, with enough earnest groveling that she'd probably dislike it immensely. If you wanted to never see her again, there's probably a way to phrase that to the admiral. I don't know. I'm creative.

But a reaction gives me leeway to use what I know. And I do have some ideas that I think will have an impact. May I ask, how long did it take you to heal, if you weren't healed magically?

Someone I had hoped to befriend. I'd been her temporary warden prior to the Enposib, and I liked her. We are very different people, but we share a delight for novelty. Some things about her worried me, a little, but we weren't at a point where I felt like I had any right to go prying into it; now, obviously I have a duty to do exactly that.
